During the past ten years, thousands of new chemical raw materials and formulations have been developed, countless new marketing concepts have been tested and hundreds, if not thousands, of new cosmetic regulations have been enacted.
With the third edition of this best-selling chemistry textbook, the authors substantially update all the original material and include 21 additional chapters of brand new material to cover recent developments in the field of cosmetic science. Authors Randy Schueller and Perry Romanowski re-emphasize the importance of providing introductory technical information to those who would like to improve their understanding of cosmetic science.
The four major sections of this book cover all important aspects of the cosmetic industry, including:
- Orientation, Tools and Terms
- Product Development
- Cosmetic Ingredients and Vehicles
- Product Testing
Perry Romanowski has worked in the beauty industry for more than 15 years and is currently vice president of Brains Publishing. He holds a BS in chemistry and an MS in biochemistry from DePaul University. Perry is an active member of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists and instructs the continuing education course titled Beginning Cosmetic Chemistry.

"This book covers a wide range of subjects, and provides an overview of the basics that should be considered when learning the ins and outs of cosmetic formulation. Anyone interested in what goes into the making of cosmetics should use this book as a first resource. Beginning Cosmetic Chemistry teaches formulation vocabulary as well as current technologies. I’ve found that the information provided is great for industry 'newbies', and even those interested in starting their own cosmetic line!"

"The authors subtitled their book Practical Knowledge for the Cosmetic Industry and they succeeded in accomplishing their mission of providing both a textbook for beginning cosmetic chemists and a reference book for the seasoned professional. It is often difficult for writers experienced in a technical subject to provide a narrative that really covers the full spectrum from basics to advanced science, but Schueller and Romanowski have been able to do just that.
The book is organized into four separate parts, each dealing with a facet of cosmetic chemistry that a new or experienced formulator deals with on a daily basis. The first section covers all of the basic nomenclature and industry "slang" that a formulator needs to know in order to effectively understand the science and communicate with others in the field. Of particular value is the chapter on the importance of building relationships with suppliers; a topic that is not usually covered in technical books, but is an important element of effective formulation.
The second section moves up the knowledge chain, covering first the biology of skin and hair and then delves into the chemistry of the key chemical families that are used in cosmetic products. Finally this section deals with the underbelly of cosmetic products — control of microorganisms.
The third section is of particular value for new chemists and experienced ones alike as it starts with chapters detailing the methods for and importance of recordkeeping as it relates to step-wise product development and protection of intellectual property. The section moves on to cover the cosmetic equivalent of a "soup to nuts" dinner of formulation topics.
The final section of the book deals with the last phase of product development including regulatory compliance, protocols for product testing, and last but not least, claims support. To sum things up, this book, by virtue of the fact that it is now in its third edition, is a testament to the value it brings to any level of cosmetic formulator, making it a must-have for the any chemist’s library."

"Beginning Cosmetic Chemistry by Schueller and Romanowski works great for me as a text to supplement my Cosmetic Product Development graduate course. Information packed chapters give the bench chemist or beginning student a solid foundation in the groundwork subjects they need to master to be successful in the personal care industry. I wish I had a similar volume when I started."

"Beginning Cosmetic Chemistry by Schueller and Romanowski is a great introduction to Cosmetic Chemistry, with enough information to provide novice and experienced formulators with 'something they didn't know.' A great reference book for everyone connected with the beauty industry from marketer to account executive, from scientist to raw material supplier."
