Since it is impossible to identify some terpenes by mass spectrum only, the Adams library with retention times and Kovat's indices is the only terpene library that one can use to identify more than 95% of the components in common essentials oils with certainty. A comprehensive collection of mass spectra and retention times of common components in plant essential oils, this reference covers 2,205 compounds, each including:

  • RT—retention time on DB-5 capillary column
  • AI—arithmetic retention index
  • KI—Kovat's retention index
  • CAS#—chemical abstracts service number
  • MF—molecular formula
  • FW—formula weight
  • MSD LIB#—entry number in library
  • CN—chemical name
  • List of synonyms
  • Source of compound used for spectrum. If the compound occurs in nature, two additional sources for the compound (concentration at % oil, plant name, literature reference) are included.

All 2,205 compounds have been analyzed from their original sources on an HP5971 MSD mass spectrometer using HP Chemstation software. In addition, the library (including retention times) is now available for the most common mass spectrometer/computer systems.

The 4th Edition now includes:

  • An additional 600 compounds
  • 2,205 compounds analyzed from their original sources
  • Larger and easier to read mass spectra
  • Occurrence nature information
  • 37% more content than the 2001 3rd Edition!

Robert P. Adams, PhD, is a Professor at Baylor University. He has been studying essential oils of plants for more than 40 years and has published more than 230 peer reviewed journal articles and 11 technical books.

"The fourth edition of Robert Adams’s book contains mass spectra and retention data for 2,205 compounds, an increase of approximately 600 over those listed in the third edition. Once again there is a wide variety of terpenes, hydrocarbons, alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, esters, carboxylic acids, both aliphatic and aromatic, and nitrogen and sulfur containing compounds usually encountered in natural oils and fragrances.

In the fourth edition the Retention Indices (both Kovats Retention Indices and Arithmetic Retention Indices) are included for all compounds, determined on the widely used DB-5 column. Two tables of the retention indices are also included and are arranged both alphabetically and in Retention Index order.

The inclusion of the Retention Index data is a major plus for the book as it allows comparison of “unknown” spectra and retention time with standards, run on the readily available and often used column. Like its predecessor edition, which I have used often in my work on essential oils, I have found this new, expanded fourth edition to be an extremely useful compilation of data and would highly recommend it."

"If you are doing research in essential oils components or have to identify unknowns, Identification of Essential Oil Components by Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry, 4th Edition, will be a valuable addition to your collection of resources, even if you have the third edition."
