The Antimicrobial/Biological Activity of Essential Oils presents 113 scientific contributions to The Journal of Essential Oil Research. Though topics mainly cover antimicrobial and antifungal activity (such as infections, wound care and dermatology), this volume also includes papers dealing with genotoxicity problems, cutaneous effects, activities on the autonomic nervous system, free radical scavenger properties, effects on the lipid composition, anti-cancer properties, anti-oxidant effects and much more.
International in scope and of a high standard of technical merit and scientific quality, this reference covers a diverse range of topics, including:
- Mycotoxic effects of Thymus serpyllum oil on the asexual reproduction of Aspergillus species
- The chemical composition and antifungal activity of the essential oil obtained from in vitro plants of Thymus mastichina L.
- Evaluation of common antibacterial screening methods utilized in essential oil research
- Composition and antimicrobial activity of Ammoides pusilla (Brot.) Breistr. essential oil
- And many more!
Expert Review
"Up to now, information about the biological activities of essential oils has been rather scarce and scattered throughout many scientific and esoteric journals. Therefore, the credit is due to the editor for publishing a book dealing with the biological properties of essential oils. The resulting publication is very nearly the first book on this very interesting topic. This volume is a compilation of articles published in the renowned Journal of Essential Oils Research, one of the leading journals dealing exclusively with this class of natural compounds or natural mixtures. Running from 1989 to the present (the deadline before printing), 113 individual scientific contributions to JEOR were collected and bound together. Due to the interest and ease of biological activity scientific research—mainly antimicrobial and antifungal—they compose the bulk of the articles in this book. Yet this volume also includes papers dealing with genotoxicity problems, cutaneous effects, activities on the autonomic nervous system, free radical scavenger properties, effects on the lipid composition, anti-phlogistic qualities, cytotoxicity activities, anti-malarial capacities, repellent efficacy, anti-cancer properties and anti-oxidant effects.
This book presents a very valuable pool of specialized knowledge about essential oil science, and is recommended warmly to all who are interested in essential oils, fragrances and flavors, and terpenes and natural substances."
